If you are using math as a metaphor then you are no longer speaking about math. As Mr. Incredible so clearly stated, Math is Math.

Furthermore I'll draw attention to the fact you characterized it like as "like a grade schooler" despite it being just as accurately (if not more accurately) characterized as "like you would in a STEM school". The former having an implicit dismissive connotation that you likely thought you could sneak into the subtext.

But yes, those people are talking math as a metaphor and not like they do in the STEM fields, and as such they aren't talking about Math anymore. 2+2=4 in STEM and the M in STEM is Math. The M in STEM is not for "metaphor".
