I guess you're probably not familiar with the source material and are basing your opinion on the more recent games, but the setting is reasonably close to what you might see in some cities. While there are futuristic elements and fantasy, the overall theme was very contemporary. When you go through the core book (I *think* it was a core edition, I'm not sure what happened to my copy), it has suggestions for encounters in convenience stores.

Additionally, the cyber-tech is often pretty low budget. The potential upgrades include installing a shotgun in somebody's forearm, something that you kinda can do with modern technology. Granted, part of it is that it was a future as envisioned in the 1980s and it was only set maybe 40-50 years in the future (which iirc they've pushed out)

And your other favorite, Werewolf: The Apocalypse >_>

Even if you go by that the original games still had magic and thing's like elves and dragons bro. So even if we go with the oldest version of Shadowrun the 1980's version which I owned as a kid it still doesn't fit.

Like I said it's a futuristic setting mashed with fantasy elements. Shit even back then the hacking done was by jacking into computers and entering a VR inside the computer world, and I recall that very well because the first Shadowrun source book had an elf jacking into cyberspace. I also recall you could become like wolverine and get claws put into your hand that could be retracted.
