He was apart of a traveling circus but the owners were going to just flat out kill him because he has dwarfism. So the couple rushed to rescue him and have had him since. They have done this with two cheetahs as well, rescue them from circuses. The funny thing about Messi is he's probably the most docile thing. He's done obedience training with dogs, has absolutely zero issues with vet visits. Recently they had a video where he steals a bag of meat they were thawing out for him and the husband takes it from him.
