Some of my family is rooted in the american south. If I were born 130 years earlier I could have easily been one if them.
That's fine but you can't lie about it either.

Pushing that the people of the South didn't know about slavery and didn't support it and/or that we have no way of knowing what they thought, simply is not true.

You're pretty much dishonoring your own ancestors by doing that. Remember them for who they were, deeply flawed, complex people who passionately believed things that we would find grotesque. Including defending and wanting to expand slavery and the willingless to massacre their own people in order to do so.

Hell arguing the lie of "they were all complete idiots who didn't know a damn thing and were trickedd by da no good gubbermut!" is arguably more insulting to their memories than accepting the horrible things they did do.
