Just part of the human psyche of the populous seems to be conformity even to the nonsensical and that's always exploited. Ever heard "YOu can lead a horse to water but you can't make it drink?" For humans it's "You can lead a human to water and he can look you right in the eye and say there's no water there despite standing right next to it.
