TopicFalcon and the Winter Soldier won't be as popular as Wandavision

Anything would have a hard time following Wandavision. An action show in the vein of Jack Ryan is going to have a hard time stacking up against a surreal horror sitcom pastiche that gave two very underbaked characters the development they've needed for years. It's like following Spirited Away with Fury.

With that being said, if Falcon and the Winter Soldier is being headed by the Russo brothers, it'll have a fighting chance at being a well received show. Those guys know how to make entertaining comic book stuff, whether it's whatever the fuck Endgame was or an action romp like Captain America 2. And the show might have a similar appeal to Wandavision, because all I know about Bucky Barnes comes from him being a plot device from Winter Soldier onwards - it could fill out his character in a similar way to Wanda and Vision.

And while Falcon had a great establishing movie, he's just sort of been a sidedish character ever since Civil War - he had a great cameo in Ant Man, before we knew that he'd basically be reduced to that sort of role going forward. After that, he's pretty much just a poseable action figure to supplement the rest of the movies.

Falcon and the Winter Soldier could be good if they do a remotely decent job with the character building. I feel like that's what this phase of Marvel is all about - they're actually adding depth to characters who've been missing it this entire time. I didn't give a fuck about Scarlet Witch until now, she had a little bit of focus in Ultron before becoming a poseable action figure from Civil War onwards. I didn't give a fuck about Vision at all, I never got his deal and I never saw him really get to kick ass.

Wandavision fixed both characters, because they're actually written as their own in-depth characters, their supposed romance is actually justified and shown instead of happening offscreen and being forced into an emotional lynchpin moment for a greater crossover movie despite having next to no development, and they actually get defining superhero movements like you'd see in a proper character-establishing movie.

Bucky Barnes has a journey, but does he have much character? For most of his time in the franchise, outside of maybe the first Captain America movie, he's been a plot device. Falcon was a cool new addition in Winter Soldier, but since then he hasn't had much to do. This upcoming TV show could do a good job of developing and establishing these two characters in a way that the movies have neglected, just like Wandavision did for Wanda and Vision.

Viewing it as an action show ala Jack Ryan makes it seem likely to be a failure - but thinking about it as a Marvel show featuring two underbaked characters, coming off the heels of a greatly successful show featuring two underbaked characters? I doubt it'll be as unorthodox and charming as Wandavision, but it could still be really good if they're trying to do the same sort of thing that Wandavision excelled at.
