Unlimited PTO is the bullshit of bullshit.

Like I'm sure there are some companies that do it right but for most it just makes it harder for the employees to take off the time they would want to take.

When you have a set number of PTO hours, they are yours. It isn't up for debate or dispute. If you have two weeks off you can take two weeks off. When you have unlimited PTO, or as long as the work gets done, you are put in the situation of having to defend your PTO usage. And even if the company doesn't intend for it to feel that way, the employee will still end up feeling it.

My recommendation. Pretend you have three weeks of vacation and take off time like that's your allotted PTO for the year. Track it so you can tell anyone who pushes back on you exactly how much you have taken. You can adjust going forward based on the success of your initial three weeks. Everything got done, nobody complained? Try for four next year. People started fighting you at week three or the work started to fall behind. Do three weeks again but plan it out better.
