First, Baghdad was founded in 762 AD and there's a large water source for it, the other cities are in higher elevations in more hospital climates

Lets use Syria for example, all of the cities are either on a river source, or higher elevation areas, no one lives in the desert parts. North Africa is similar, nobody lives south of the Atlas range or they hug the coast/major water source. Does Phoenix even have a river that doesn't dry up most of the year?
