Big portions of it are kept open for months at a time because of seasonal rainfall and flooding. Trump abused executive authority to declare a crisis that he himself admitted didn't exist the same day he declared it, to take tens of millions of dollars from the military to fund the wall. These were funds meant for infrastructure improvement and updating/building facilities for troops' families (like new schools). It is extremely damaging to the environment. It can cause a severe loss of biodiversity and extinction of one or more species.
