Waiting in the Summer. It was one of the last anime shows I saw before I decided to give it up.

My main thing used to be Slice of Life shows - Kimi Ni Todoke, Ano Hana, Golden Time etc. I liked shows that were centred on relatively grounded casts living in the real world - the only real disappointment in this aspect was Your Lie in April, which felt like its emotional gut punches were cheap and manipulative.

And over time I had come to really dislike fanservice shows, because it's like if you want to watch something to get off to, just go and look at porn y'know - gratuitous booby shots and upskirts and whatever are lame as fuck and detract from the show as a whole. I don't think I've seen a fanservice-driven show that I haven't hated.

The first episode of Waiting in the Summer ended like a cheap fanservice show, with the main character being fawned over by a girl in a towel - his head in her lap and her boobs on his face, which his entire family walks in on. It looked really trashy, and I didn't expect it to come back from that.

And yet somehow, it did.

It was a weak 7/10 at the time with a solid ending, but it passed muster and I genuinely really enjoyed it by the time it finished. Even after one of the characters had a storyline about being a nudist, the show didn't linger on skeezy porn shots and it had a solid emotional core to it. The fact that I remember it among the ranks of Ano Hana and all that says something about it imo, even though I would recommend it as an alright show of that nature but not over any of the other shows I mentioned.

I can feel it in my bones, I'm gonna spend another year alone.
