Right before they reached Tom Bombadil, the hobbits went through the Barrow Downs, an ancient war zone that is now haunted. While escaping, the hobbits grabbed the weapons that were buried in a tomb, not realizing these weapons were magical. I believe Tom Bombadil took a look at these weapons when he rescued the hobbits from the old tree and realized what they were, and told them to keep them. It was a very well-kept example of foreshadowing. --- Thinking Luigi and WAAAA > Pokemon Trainers was dumb, and Pokemon rocks.
