It's tempting to think a delayed game will be more polished, but often this isn't true. In some cases it is. I generally trust Nintendo when they delay something.

But often times delays are indicative of major issues. Aspects of a game being scrapped and redesigned, game breaking bugs, miscommunication in the management, or a dev team not being able to deliver the game as imagined. Sometimes the game is not even in active development when delayed. Most publishers would rather release a bad game if they can avoid a delay.

Duke Nukem Forever is the most infamous example. Anthem is another big one.

Dev time is a lot like budget. You'd think it would correlate with quality, but that's an oversimplification.
