Damn it's so good.

And I always thought that shot of him putting his helmet on was just to tease that he's not quite normal underneath.

But in actuality, it's the first time we actually see anything resembling humanity with Vader, kinda like how we see "peeks" at it through his interactions with Luke.

Its one thing that the prequels did well. By seeing what Anakin went through, it adds so much to Vader in the OT.

All this time the hatred and anger that has kept Vader going isnt toward the Jedi, but himself. He betrays everything he stood for and believed in out of fear of Padme dying, then is led to believe that he himself killed her.

Then to find out that he has a son, which means she didnt die and his Master lied to him about it this whole time. He starts thinking about taking out his Master, and wants his sons help.

Fast forward to RotJ, Vader is no longer executing Imperial Officers on a whim, and there is more of a sadness to him. Luke wont turn and help him take out Palpatine so he resigns to his life of torment. Until the throne room. He sees Luke turn away and not embrace the Dark Side. He does what Vader couldnt.

Seeing Palpatine with Luke is a direct callback to Palpatine and Windu. Palpatine shooting his lightning at a Jedi, except this time he is in the dominant position. Vader has the chance to right the wrong he committed long ago when he took out Windu and takes a look, says fuck this guy, chucks his Master down the shaft.

Its really masterful storytelling all around.
