Ancient records kept a distinction between them whether Semitic (Mizraim vs Kush; I know Hebrew but Akkadian and Aramaic used similar terms) or Greek (Egypt vs. Ethiopia). They even did it themselves I would actually say they were pretty good as to knowing who was who even for related but distinct peoples: Assyrians vs. Babylonians vs. Arameans, until the Arameans assimilated with Assyria and Medes vs. Persians.
