Properly? About 9 months ago, when my 18-year-old family cat died. That was more the circumstances than anything else, since she had to be put down shortly after pandemic restrictions started, which meant her last experience was being taken out of the back of the car by a stranger and kept overnight before they put her down with nobody she knew around. I really just felt bad for her, though of course it was also sad to lose such a long-time pet (though not that surprising, given her age).

Prior to that, I was at a concert with my girlfriend about a year and a half ago and they played a song that holds a ton of mixed emotions for me, given how much it meant to my late father. Prior to that was ~ 3.5 years ago, when my other family cat died at 15 (very sudden, first time losing a pet). Prior to that was ~6 years ago when my dad suffered a massive stroke out of nowhere and died. Couldn't tell you how long it was before that, since that had been a very long time.
