the expression on his face when he pulls his hands out of his pockets

so how we don't know anything about columbo makes him into sort of like a force of nature. in a given episode we learn more about the murderer than we do columbo - we know their motive, goal, circumstance, social circle, etc. columbo sometimes doesn't roll in until halfway through an episode before methodically disrupting and dismantling everything we've just learned, which is a weirdly liminal position for the supposed main character to occupy.

the insight you gain into the character over time is just having seen him put his hand to his forehead in the same manner a bunch, seen him say "one more thing" and tell similar stories a bunch of times to see the performance for what it is, but it's still left mysterious what and how much is artifice, but also it's a mystery that's not worth caring about at all. if they remade this show they'd probably want to delve into his backstory and shit and fuck that.
