my last one, actually. original boss took on a partner (officially in November, but functionally in July). I've known both these people for decades. the new guy is caustic, but i thought it could work.

narrator: it didn't work.

he was immediately the "boss from hell" caricature. nothing was ever done right. nothing was ever enough. i went from ~85% autonomy to being under this guy's thumb in all things. and he wasn't even supposed to be able to give me suggestions, let alone orders. but the original boss couldn't, or wouldn't, get him to back off. So, after about 5 months of this, i gave up. Gave 20 days notice at the beginning of January. Somehow, neither of them seemed to see it coming. they both tried a lot of words to get me to reconsider. so i did. it was pretty much the job i want, barring not actually being the owner.

the first day after i said i would stay was a very busy night. the new owner also was unable to be there. it went great. i was happy, the old boss was happy, the customers were happy. at the end of the night, after working from 4PM to about 2AM, and expected to be back in early the next afternoon, i start to drive home.

it's cold, there's a snowstorm coming, and my tire is completely flat. in the cold and dark, it looks like there's a major puncture. i have a spare and a jack, but can't remember how to work it and don't want to do something stupid while i'm so tired. I call AAA. am told it'll be about an hour. 75 minutes later, they call me back, tell me the guy on call declined to help me. they're looking for a backup. He doesn't get to me until after 5. as he's working, i make some conversation, mention the long wait. he tells me he's the guy on call for the area, and AAA never even offered him my case. awesome.

so, i get to bed a little before 7. wake up a little before 1. exhausted and frustrated, but decide just to get going. i get to work a little later than i hoped to, but the old boss knew my situation and understood. new boss is occupied with a customer when i get there. i immediately go to help another customer, who is a regular. old boss finishes with his customer. demands i move to let him pass, while we're behind a counter that's barely 1 person deep. i tell him that there's a new entrance to get to where he needs to get to. i think i was polite about it, but apparently he took this as me telling him i just killed his mother. immediately starts back up all the shit i had just unquit over.

i'm already having an awful day. it's clear this guy is never going to change. peace.

that was pretty cathartic.
