My in-laws in China simply got lucky and their land became extremely valuable. They technically had the land from the post-cultural revolution redistribution. So likely in the past someone else had the land, was killed, my in-laws received it, and then thanks to chance the land became so valuable they could just rent it out and become extremely wealthy. That's actually a common story in Beijing among landlords. Probably elsewhere too.
