The first thing obvious to me, is that you'd have very little say in where you actually end up being assigned an apartment. Saying it is interesting doesn't mean I think it would turn out well. I would like to see what would happen. Some of my in-laws in China are landlords and they just basically are on vacation all the time and don't actually do anything. I don't know any landlords in the US, but I imagine many people have similar lives. You can see why that kind of lifestyle would anger people who pay rent.
