If he drove to his familys business, where there was guns stored for self defence purposes, and he was given one to help defend, then it helps Kyles case of self-defense.

big picture stuff

It helps explain why he's there, but it doesn't necessarily mean that's what he did in that incident. In a sense, it proves he was in the mindset to be trigger-happy. He's of the thought someone may attack and require shooting, so would be hyper sensitive to anybody acting "suspiciously".
