Some errors are just plain stupid, like a loose gas cap. Others are things you might be able to fix yourself, depending on how handy you are (and how hard your car is to repair), like an oxygen sensor or a mass air flow sensor. And some are things that you'll probably want a pro to do, like replacing a catalytic converter. Being able to see what the error is will also tell you if this is something that you can put off for a while or if it needs to be fixed NOW.
