I read it in elementary school so out of curiosity I reread it. I realize that childrens literature overuses similes. It feels like if they removed every instance of a simile, itd feel like any other typical book.

Anyway, I found it incredibly touching. And I hadnt remembered the subplot about how Jesse wants to be an artist and does not receive approval from his dad.

And then, yes I did cry over the ending third, but not when Leslie dies, but rather, when the teacher consoles Jesse and talk about her husband who passed away. And also when Bill, Leslies dad, tries to console Jesse but ends up crying himself. As an adult, its probably because I can more easily relate to the adult characters than Jesse.

Also, did you know that an early chapter of the book uses the word bitched lol

Anyway, which should be the next childrens literature book I read:
Sarah Plain and Tall
Sounder
Walk to Moons
The View from Saturday
