This is why shitty fast food still exists because people don't care it's severely unhealthy.

That's probably more a function of how the human brain works. Multiple studies have kind of shown that, given the choice between "cheap and convenient" and "quality", people will chose the cheap and easy option 100% of the time.

It's why stores like Wal-Mart prosper (and why people tend to ignore the long-term consequences of supporting stores like Wal-Mart).

Basically, we eat fast food as a culture because it's fast, it's easy, and it's cheaper than healthier prepared food alternatives.

It also tends to be heavy in sugars in fats, so we get the short-term high that kicks in addictive behavior in our lizard brains, even if we're aware of the long-term effects it can have on our health. That's "Tomorrow Me"'s problem, not mine (which is another psychological phenomenon that studies have been done on, which kind of underlines why we tend to be so shit at sacrificing short-term gratification for long-term benefit - humans literally process the idea of their future selves as if it was an entirely different person. We tend to process "Future Me" the same way we process "Bob, the guy who lives next door").
