Likewise, the Republican party isn't terribly conservative. Keep in mind that the 2012 nominee was the former governor of MASSACHUSETTS ffs, who put in place numerous large-scale social welfare programs including universal healthcare. This was the so-called "conservative". The Republican party has relatively few fiscal conservatives and, just like Bernie (who wasn't really a Democrat anyway), the most extreme members of their party never make it through. That's why they put forward Trump in 2016 instead of Ted Cruz. While you could probably make an argument that Republicans overall have consistently moved to the left (because society in general has moved to the left), you can't make an argument that they've consistently moved to the right.

I would certainly argue that it has moved to the left. But, more to the point, I think what's happening is that the Republican party is in the process of re-birth. Trump's shaken up a lot of the old-timey politicians and policies and his general populist approach has been highly successful among the voter base. Combine that with the general toxicity and rapid-left movement of the democrats resulting in a lot of political homeless (which the right is doing their best to embrace) and the Republican party in power now simply isn't the same one in place in 2012. Regardless of if Trump wins or not the next four years are going to likely result in massive changes in the party simply from the leftward lurch of the Dems. What, exactly, the changes will be will depend on if Trump wins or not and on how the left reacts to the next four years, but 2024 will almost certainly see a bunch of candidates on the right who simply are not even remotely part of the 'old guard'. Considering the two most common names I've heard for a nomination are Kanye and Ivanka I won't be surprised if, in 2024, the Republican party has a PoC/female candidate in the slightest. Of course we're nowhere near that point and so much can change in the four years; but I will remain hopeful.
