If you live in an HOA you do own the property but you are contractually obligated to certain duties and restrictions, usually including not renting it out and proper maintenance etc. I personally think they're just about the worst thing ever fucking created and am glad I live in a state that has given very little power to HOAs on what they are allowed to do at all Yeah, there's no point to owning a home if you're going to be held to rental standards.
