It's ridiculous to expect justices, judges, etc, to be machines. However, and far more importantly, "conservative" justices (ie, really just Republican-nominated justices) are far more likely to vote against their political orientation than liberal judges. The liberal justices typically always vote together on ideological lines whereas "conservative" justices tend to either vote with liberals, dissent, write separate opinions, etc. Or, in other words, Democrat-nominated candidates almost always vote Democrat, whereas Republican-nominated candidates tend to vote more independently.
