It's always been there to a degree but this recent strain is largely influenced by propaganda spread by billionaires like the Koch brothers and Dennis Prager.
People who, of course, inherited their wealth, basically don't do anything, and cause harm to the world in their worst moments. They're a lot like some of our Founding Fathers, and other millionaires and billionaires.

"Rugged individualism" has always been a euphemism for shoving your fat, baby powder smelling rich ass into people's face in order to be first in line, avoid responsibilities, and reap the rewards of other people's hard work. It implies that our civilization is just some wilderness that needs to be conquered, but of course, the wealthy and the privileged have made it illegal for anyone to take that to heart and use it against them. Convenient.
