But what I'm talking about is when the hero is screwed and manages to survive thanks to some external factor. For example: The bad guy has the good guy tied up and has a gun aimed at him. BANG! The good guy flinches, looks down, sees he isn't injured, looks at the bad guy, who coughs up blood and falls over, revealing the buddy/ally we all thought died. Or: The bad guy has the good guy tied up and has a gun aimed at him. BANG! The water heater the good guy had been putting off having repaired explodes with extremely convenient timing, taking out the bad guy.
