I had this mentally handicapped customer at the grocery store and his parents have engrained in him to call employees sir and maam especially when asking for help. And like at first it made me uncomfortable so I always gave him a dude back to try to bring it down, but it was always thank you, sir at the end. Eventually instead of trying to bring him down to how I talk, I started calling him sir right back. He looked proud of himself, like not only that he earned my respect but that my respect was worth earning. What a good customer.
