If it goes up temporarily and comes right back down you can still get wiped out because you are forced to cover at the top if you don't have enough margin to keep holding the short position. Probably lots of people did short Hertz at $2-4 when it was rising the first time, and sustained losses of between 50% and 400% depending on where they got in and how much margin they used.
