Babe seems a little overt to me, though, especially when used in a private message like this. And in the midwest people talking about babes and chicks use it in more of a derogatory way, like calling them dames or something.

But you may be on to something. I remember one time my older friend calling my mom a sweetheart and she was upset about it. Personally I like when strangers call me sweetheart and stuff like that. But when they say it to me its not meant in a sexual way and I can see how it would be off-putting if it were used that way. But my friend wasnt using it that way on my mom, he was using it in the southern fashion. I think she found it disrespectful or something because shes his elder.
