If the EU slowed the virus down by shutting everything down the whole time, then what's going to stop it from going back up as soon as they reopen? Nobody is going to have vaccines for a long time, and at this rate the U.S. will reach a herd immunity much quicker while having a stronger economy. The virus only stays in your system for so long. The idea is to lock down long enough for people to recover from it, while creating a safe plan for reopening.
