Don't get one if you can't shell out $1,000 for an emergency, don't get one unless you like constant responsibility and patience. Also the example with a broken hip sounds like an extreme example. Yeah it could happen but it's very unlikely. I dunno depends on the kind of dog you're getting. A small lap dog just needs constant attention, whereas a big one you're going to be feeding more and walking more and training more.

That. It's not just money, it's also time. And if you can't afford to spend a little extra of either then you shouldn't get a pet.
