Firstly, thanks to @BalanceLost for letting me piggyback off of his format :P

...except I'm not! While German is known for its compound words, I'll be doing something different: false friends. These are words that look like one word, but mean another. Example: the adjective dick. It looks like it'd mean penis/jerk/Richard, but the actual meaning is fat/thick.

To keep things simple I'll stick to nouns, especially those that I've encountered myself.

So, without further ado: what are the English meanings of the following words?

  1. der Beamer
  2. der Oldtimer
  3. das Gymnasium
  4. das Handy
  5. der Brief
  6. das Gift
  7. das Genie
  8. der Mist
  9. der Rock
  10. der Roman

tl;dr: All of these are German words. Guess what they mean in English!

Have fun!
