If someone says they are going to do something horrible to you, your family and friends and / or your possessions in a legitimate threatening manner, it could very well happen and there are no other witnesses and you don't have any proof to show police, are you just going to let them walk away or confront them about it, knowing it could escalate?

That would be a threat, not someone calling you a bad word. I hope you understand the difference. And just to get this out of the way and try to clap back - I don't have any issue with punching a racist for saying a racist thing to someone. But you need to learn the difference
