I see the appeal to go the classical route. I absolutely love performing, and miss it a ton. Im a percussionist, and have a music education degree. I was into orchestral percussion in college, and loved playing and performing.

But I went the education route, and mainly teach now, and never have time/energy to practice much anymore. Its sad.

Considering leaving the teaching profession though, and might go back to grad school for a masters in perc performance, or maybe get an audio engineering degree. Some tough choices to make for sure.
I know a lot of music educators who feel similar. Its a shame, because the best music educators put so much time into it that they lose their instrument time. I know so many shitty music educators who graduated with a music ed degree and didnt practice for shit in college because Im gonna be teaching, not performing. Cant teach music if youre not good at it imo, so I commend you for actually taking your instrument(s) seriously while also pursuing education as a degree, it certainly is difficult to balance
