Even as a little kid, I was probably more interested in Donald or Goofy (or outright ignored the "core" Disney stuff in favor of stuff like Snow White, Cinderella, Alice, Robin Hood, etc). And as you get older, Mickey gets less and less cool while Bugs just kind of gets more and more appealing. KH was probably around the start of what got me to care about Mickey. I imagine a lot of the problem is that Disney tried to make him bland and inoffensive for so many years -- to ensure he wouldn't offend parents -- that he was utterly unappealing.
