Very few people genuinely believe he is alt right himself. He just comes off as appealing to alt right types. As you said, he has a habit of inviting lots of hard right wing guests and tossing them softballs. He is more of an annoying centrist who likes to act like he is so impartial by labeling both sides as the same as he picks and chooses when to align himself with either side.
