It's extremely dangerous, not just because it can kill, but because survivors can suffer severe permanent damage (this includes previously healthy young people who now cannot breathe without machine assistance, btw), and that isn't being properly emphasized when talking about the damage that it does.

Which is why I'm so afraid of potentially catching it (or of my friends and family who are anywhere near as sick as I am catching it, which is a few).

I'm already so disabled & chronically ill that I can't work, am on more morphine than the average palliative-care patient, have dozens of joint dislocations every day thanks to Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, I've got half a dozen different physical impairments and another half dozen mental health conditions on top of that, and I'm a full-time powerchair user, at least beyond my front door (indoors I live in one big open-plan room plus bathroom, and try to stick to my canes). The way my life is right now, it's all a balancing act. I get on okay enough.

If I caught the nasty strain of this virus, and it came to the point where I needed to be intubated and put on a ventilator, if my local frailty scale even allowed medical staff to try that? I'd be lucky to survive, and if it did the damage it's done to other people to me in my current condition, I'm truly not certain whether I would want to.

Right now though, I do want to live. And I want to keep it that way. So I'm shielding as hard as I can, and will do so for as long as I must. (And if that means missing UK DWcon in August, then damn it, that's just a hit I may have to take, if it's go or live.)

But you can't blame people like me for being at least a little bit scared. Or for being a LOT careful.
