Universe Dream Land Duelist Kingdom: Yu-Gi-Oh is one of the like ten anime I have watched, though it was as a kid. I remember the abridged series much better. Shonen anime? Gotta have a tournament arc and a silver-haired prettyboy. I remember the island this takes place on being like a giant forest with a huge castle built on top of a hill. Who built that castle? Why did he decide to build a castle in an uninhabited forest on a deserted island? I want to learn more about that guy. Los Santos: So, Los Angeles. Its a good choice for a modern-era adventure, but I would prefer like New Orleans. Add a weird voodoo element, it has a little more weird personality than we have. Honestly, this is just Los Angeles, what can I even say? Everyone knows LA. I know it better than most, since I live here. Instead, Ill talk about Pacific Rim 2. I was ****ing flabbergasted when a monster destroys the Santa Monica Pier. I had no idea the Santa Monica Pier was even famous enough to be destroyed in a bad monster movie. Who passes up the opportunity to destroy the Hollywood sign in favor of the pier? Paradox Space: So, its a multiverse propped up by temporal paradoxes? And theres some kind of Sims-like game on top of it? Look, Im sure Homestuck has plenty of insane lore, but its like the longest, most complicated thing ever. I dont think I can rank this in good conscience without reading the comic, and I cant do that. Ravenloft: No joke, I was thinking about this setting a few weeks ago, but I couldnt remember the name. I guessed Ravendark, and everyone thought that was hilarious. I mean, look. I know I said earlier that I like gothic stuff, but I have my limits. A dimension of misty evil ruled over by Darklords, where all monsters are evil even if they would normally be neutral, and nothing but spooky castles and mansions? Its not quite silly enough for my tastes, but its also not, like, genuinely cool enough, either. Pass. Bright Falls: A mining town in Washington, eh? With Native Americans who got pushed off the land? Sounds similar to the Life is Strange town. But theres a spooky lake located in a volcanic caldera, and it leads to THE DARK PLACE. What a silly name. Arcadia and Stark: Mmm Okay, so a medieval world where technology doesnt work. Alright. But it also has no complex social strata, and a single language? I dont think so. And there are four continents, just called Northland, Eastland, Southland, and Westland? Immersion: ruined. Hoenn: I would make a writeup, but my ears are currently being destroyed by trumpets. Mount Massive Asylum for the Criminally Insane: What are the most played-out locations for horror? It has to be remote mansions, mental asylums, and the campground just outside of town, right? And its the site of Nazi scientists working for the United States and involves MKUltra stuff? Mmmmmmm no thanks. Fallout Universe: Fallout, eh? Does anyone mind if I complain how Super-Mutants are in Boston, when they were invented in Los Angeles and shouldve just remained an LA thing? Ah well. I like the Mad Max setting, I like the permanently 1950s Americana stuff, and I like the NCR and Las Vegas. Caesars Legion is a bit too black-and-white evil for my tastes, I really feel a better job could have been done with them. One thing thats always confused me about this setting is the backstory. Im perfectly willing to accept an alternate timeline where the Cold War goes hot and the world is destroyed. Fine. No prob. My problem here is that the war is between the United States and China. They even write into the backstory the US made peace with the USSR. Why? Why does that detail exist? Its so bizarre. Its much more natural and easy if the world is destroyed by the US and USSR. The Sixth World: I tell people I dont do cyberpunk after Snow Crash, and what do they do? Nominate more cyberpunk. Shadowrun needs to just accept the truth: hacking doesnt work in a tabletop context. You cant have one player do all the work while the others just sit around and watch. And dont give me that well, they can defend his body in the real world crap. Anyway, Im okay with the idea of people randomly giving birth to dwarves, elves, etc, and its a grim cyberpunk future with weird magic and stuff. I never totally understood how the Native Americans retake a third of the United States, though. There are like 3 million in US. Anyway, I also enjoy how the only out-and-out completely evil organization is the Aztecs-owning-a-corporation. Poor Aztecs. They actually had a lot of notable accomplishments, but the only thing anyone remembers about them is the pull-your-heart-out-of-your-chest religion and mistaking white people for gods. The Sprawl: More cyberpunk? Goddamn you people, Ive only read Neuromancer. So the premise here is that in the future, the East Coast will just be an elongated city, and everyone will live in garbage homes or giant apartment buildings, etc. Its kind of funny that elements of it did come true, though. Its almost impossible to talk about this for the same reason as Middle-Earth: its just too much the default cyberpunk setting to even analyze. I do like the idea of street samurai, though, and Molly, who has to be a prostitute to pay for her cybernetics. I also like the id ... Copied to Clipboard! |
