NEVER talk to the police.

They CAN and WILL use anything you say against you in a court of law. And if you aren't already a suspect, you might say something that makes you a suspect. If you make a mistake or an omission they might construe that as lying. The cops are allowed to try to trick you into saying the wrong things. And they might "misremember" things that you have said, as they aren't legally required to record any interviews.

You have the right to speak to an attorney, invoke it. Be firm and persistent but polite about it. Once you lawyer up the cops can't ask you any more questions without the lawyer being present. At the very least you'll have a witness on your side if they pull any shenanigans.
