Agrabah: I wonder what its like to live in the Middle-East and know that this is the first fictional image that comes to mind for people outside of it. Im not quite sure what to say about everyones favorite desert city-state. The actual city seems to consist of nothing except flat-topped rectangular buildings connected by conveniently swingable ropes. The palace is designed with minarets in mind despite not being a mosque. Its also like a third the size of the city just by itself. For all the Sultan seems sympathetic, the guy is clearly living in ridiculous splendor while people starve. Honestly, Im kind of into it.

The Island (Lost): I think I think I might say that I hate Lost. It basically ruined sci-fi television. It and the Sopranos ushered in the modern era of TV, where everything needs to be season-long plotlines. Yes, even in a write-up about an island in an unrelated series, I will still complain about Star Trek Discovery. Okay, fine. I like the idea of a mysterious island with a vague location that has a weird history of mystical nonsense, and that traps people for conveniently 44-minute adventures. I like the smoke monster. I like the buildup of ancient statues and stuff. Its pretty good.

Yharnam: I hate steampunk. Its my least favorite genre setting. Yharnam doesnt go full steampunk, like, say, Wild Wild West, so I dont hate it or anything. Just throwing that out there. The dark gothic atmosphere is great, the endless maze of creepy buildings, the evil plague that turns you into a monster for the hero to stab to death, its all great design. And, like everyone else, I love the top hats. Add to that some Cthulhu stuff, and youve got a great setting. Much better than another medieval place. Ever wonder what this type of game would be like in another setting? I get that it has to be grim and filled with death, but there are more eras for that than just Ye Olde Medievale Ageths and the Victorian era.

Japanifornia (Ace Attorney): I wonder if the translators regret changing the setting to Los Angeles. It makes sense in the first game, but every subsequent game it makes less and less sense. I had a laugh in AAI when a major plot point is about how hard it is to find a gun in the United States unless youre a cop. And man, Gourd Lake. LA is famous for its lakes, samurai shows, and shrine maidens. Actually, the most interesting element of the setting might be the idea of all criminal trials having to be handled in three days max because there were too many cases in the past. Now thats how you do dystopia, Yharnam.

Discworld: Did you ever play Dragon Age: Origins? How it has the most ridiculously stock fantasy tropes played completely straight? I happened to play that game right after reading some Discworld books, and my main thought was What Terry Pratchett did ironically, Bioware is doing honestly. What can I even say about Discworld? I love Death, I love the Watch, and I havent read the other books, but Im sure Id love them, too. I like how the generic foreign country is named Klatch, where all generic foreign things hail from. I love how the Watch listed most deaths as suicides, because if you go into a bar and declare youre invincible, youre asking to be stabbed. Discworld is just so good.

Amestris: Ive never watched Fullmetal Alchemist. Things I know: its set in not!WWI Germany, the main character turned his brother into a robot, and the leader is called the Fuhrer. Looking through the page, I see its the result of several smaller countries unifying, ala the actual German Empire. Its going all-in on being the German Empire, right down to having government institutions be hard to tell apart from the military, silly uniforms, and leaders named Bradley? And ethnically diverse populations? Maybe not. I actually kind of like alternate history stuff, though most of it boringly revolves around WWII, and this is almost like that. Im not generally a fan of settings that are just renamed versions of real life places, but WWI Germany is unique enough that I can let that pass.
