They did another movie a few years ago that basically serves as a prequel. Supposedly there's also a remake on the way. The original -- the one you want to watch -- is from the 80s. If you do wind up liking The Thing, it's part of Carpenter's "Apocalypse Trilogy," although the other two films -- Prince of Darkness (also a great film in its own right) and Mouth of Madness (which I absolutely love, although it's a lot campier than the other two) -- aren't connected in terms of story or anything else.
