Most of us probably have families that might be more at risk than we are, you know. Or we are just empathic human beings, which is probably the case given this is that sort of board populated by that general type of person.

Without mitigation each person infects somewhere between two and three people on average (though this will vary from community to community based on density, behavior, etc). To avoid a substantial fraction of the population getting it we need to bring that number below 1. Getting part of the way there slows the spread of the virus and reduces the chances of hospitals being closed down. We cant afford not to cancel /shut down nonessential things.


Mitigation is necessary yes, I just wonder how much good certain forms of it are really going to do. If I had a child, I would rather them be in school than be inside a crowded supermarket if those are my only two choices. Obviously the best choice would be just staying at home until this dies down, but how many people are doing that and how many people even are going to have that option?
