I'm just glad they didn't sell core crystals as microtransactions. That game was so ripe for exploitation it was throbbing, and yet they kept the extra monetization to very reasonable levels (limited entirely to a pretty decent DLC pack, from what I understand). As much as the game probably would have been better without the mechanic, it really wasn't that bad to grind out all the rare blades in the late game, and prior to that it forces the player to work with what they find instead of being able to build the most powerful combos immediately.

Now, the affinity mechanic? That should never have made it into the game. Spending hours mashing A to feed items to blades was not fun (although I believe they added some better affinity items in post-release patches after I finished with the game, which might have made it better). I'm fine with having some sort of affinity mechanic that demands some grinding, but the way it was executed was just boring and had nothing to do with the rest of the gameplay.
