He resigned after his state seceded. Thats not anymore treasonous than any other person whos fought for independence. After the war he was never tried for being a traitor and helped reintegrate the North and South. Its not correct to call him a traitor.

Secession is illegal. He swore an oath to defend the United States. His actions as an officer in the Confederacy were in direct violation of the law and actively worked to enforce an illegal action.

Its nice that he helped reintegrate after the fact, but that does not make him any less a traitor. Nor does it matter whether or not he was prosecuted for it.
