#77. WWF No Mercy

Still one of the greatest Guru choices ever! For many people (including me), this is the greatest pro wrestling game ever made. Mind you, I havent bought a wrestling game made in the last decade aside from WWE All-Stars (which is a really fun game!), but that was because of the nostalgia of the wrestlers I grew up with. But No Mercy still has a strong community that mods the game to update the roster to include current wrestlers and even other promotions. What is it about this game thats given it such an enduring legacy?

Just like Revenge came out during the peak of WCW, No Mercy came out during the peak of WWFs Attitude Era, and so it has an amazing roster. It maintains the same basic gameplay as World Tour, Revenge, and Wrestlemania 2000, but its been fine tuned through those iterations and feels as good as its ever felt. Its so accessible because the controls are simple. There arent any complicated move inputs. You just punch, grab, and slam dudes. Its almost a Smash-esque control scheme. It kept the momentum meter that Revenge introduced (now aptly called the Attitude Meter), so matches always feel like theyre up for grabs until you pin the other guy down for the 3 count. It has several championship gauntlets, and its a lot of fun going through them winning and defending each title. You could actually choose different routes through those gauntlets depending on the actions you took, and even whether or not you won the match. Losing didnt automatically knock you out of the gauntlet. No Mercy also added some new modes, most prominently the ladder match.

But perhaps the main draw of No Mercy to many people is its in-depth customization for the Create a Character mode. Im not huge into that sort of thing, but my best friend would spend hours creating wrestler after wrestler (you could save up to 18 created wrestlers at a time). You could even edit and customize the current roster. So if you want to see a huge wrestler suddenly show the agility of a cruiserweight, you can do that! It was fun to mess around with that and give familiar faces a completely different moveset. It opened up so many possibilities because there might be a wrestler you personally like or want to use, but he has some crappy default moves. You can get rid of the ones you dont like and substitute in ones you do like. You can try to keep them consistent with the character or go wild. Its up to you, but its a really cool feature. It gives No Mercy a crazy amount of replay value, so theres no telling how many hours I sunk into this game back in the day.
