Im not saying its a great movie, but it made me like and care about these new characters almost immediately. The last two movies deserve the blame for wasting them.

What you're saying would be fine if The Force Awakens was the very first star wars movie ever. But do you know why it's called the sequel trilogy? Because it was supposed to follow the trend that the original trilogy and prequel trilogy started by starring characters related (storyline related, not necessarily by blood or family) to the previous episodes. We should have witnessed the culmination of all three trilogies in the ST. Not something that feels detached or remade.

Rey, Finn, Poe etc are all decent enough characters that should have been in a spin-off trilogy.
