Though I seem to remember catching Pinsir properly in Yellow, since they lowered its level in that game enough that you could procure one for Pika Cup in Stadium. (Which is not to say that you should, because Pinsir's movepool was ass for at least three generations or so. Maybe longer.) I had red version, so buying a porygon was like 9999 coins.
