Yeah, ultimately that brand of atheism is "religion isn't real and you're a fucking moron if you believe otherwise, and as such I don't owe you any of my time - by the virtue of my beliefs, I am superior to you". It was, like many stupid fucking internet cults, a bunch of short-sighted, self-important assholes who felt small in their own lives, who used their beliefs to put themselves on top and give themselves a power boost - which they would turn around and abuse to try and make other people feel small.

Atheism was touted as anti-religion, but it used the same tenets of religion to shame and belittle others while putting practitioners at the top of the food chain. Those involved with online atheism in the 2000's were no better than the fundie douchebags they claimed to be fighting against, just in the opposite direction.

I honestly believe that it's this type of person who would later go on to propagate "red pill" beliefs, which would then spiral into gamergate types and people who cried "censorship" when Steam wouldn't host Hatred on their service, among other types.
